Niladri Mahodaya Ashtami

Niladri Mahodaya Ashtami observance at Shri Jagannath Temple Puri

Today is the sacred Vaishakha Shukla Ashtami, a holy day known as Niladri Mahodaya Ashtami. According to the Vamadeva Samhita and Skanda Purana, it is said that on this very day, Lord Brahma himself performed the Pushyabhiseka (ritual bathing) of the Supreme Lord.

For ages, Lord Jagannath (Kalia Saanta) has resided in the sanctum of Niladri in the holy land of Purushottam Kshetra, celebrating thirteen festivals in twelve months. Among these, Niladri Mahodaya Ashtami is considered the thirteenth major festival of the Shri Mandir.

Ashtami Sacred Rituals

The day begins with Mangala Alati, followed by Abakasha, Gopala Ballav, and Sakala Dhupa. After these morning rituals, the 108 pitchers of water—which were consecrated (Adhibasa) the previous day—are brought in.

  • The Procession: Garabadu servants, wearing traditional masks (Baghamuha), carry the pitchers under the protection of Pratiharis. They move in a grand procession accompanied by the sounds of Ghanta (gongs), Chata (umbrellas), and Kahali (trumpets).

  • The Symbolic Bath: The deities are given a symbolic bath on mirrors using the 108 pitchers in the following distribution:

    • Lord Jagannath: 35 pitchers

    • Lord Balabhadra: 33 pitchers

    • Devi Subhadra: 22 pitchers

    • Lord Sudarshan: 18 pitchers

  • Chandan Lagi: Similar to the Pushyabhiseka ceremony, after the bath, the Panda, Pati, and Mudirasta servants bring sandalwood paste in three silver bowls to perform the Sarvanga Chandan (smearing of sandalwood) on the deities.

Celebration of the Annual Day

Following the midday offerings (Madhyanha Dhupa), the deities Ramakrishna and Madanamohana are escorted to the Simhasana (Throne). After a series of ritualistic offerings and the Bandapana (lamp ceremony), the Pujapanda offers the Ajnya Mala (garland of consent). The deities then proceed to participate in the Chandan Yatra.

This day is also celebrated as the Anniversary (Foundation Day) of the Temple. Being an auspicious day in the month of Vaishakha, it is highly recommended to engage in acts of charity and virtue.
