Ghanalagi Niti During Anasara

In Shri Jagannath culture, Mahaprabhu is served like a living member of the family. Ghanalagi Niti forms part of the Anasara healing sequence before Nava Yauvana Darshan.

On Anasara Trayodashi, the sacred Ghanalagi Niti is observed inside Shri Mandira. During this private ritual, the old Basunga Pata attached to the divine bodies is removed. A newly prepared Basunga Pata, made by the Patara Sevayats near Maa Lakshmi’s temple, is then applied with great care. After this, Shrimukha Hota is placed on the sacred forms.

The Daitapati and Pati Mahapatra Sevayats perform these confidential services while the deities are covered with red cloth. This protects the dignity of the divine bodies and preserves the ancient discipline of Shri Mandira.

Ghanalagi Niti in the Healing Sequence

According to Niladri Mahodaya, Ghanalagi Niti follows Phuluri Tela Lagi, Osha Lagi, Dasamula Lagi, Sarvanga Chandana and Rajaprasada Bije. It is followed by Khali Prasad, a sacred coating prepared by the Suddha Suara Sevayats.

After Sandhya Dhupa, the Khali is prepared at their homes and kept in a sanctified condition. Before its journey, women perform Bandapana to the vessel. Then, with Bije Kahali, bells, umbrellas and temple honours, three Sevayats carry the Khali Prasad for Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra to Shri Mandira.

The coating is placed in silver vessels and handed to the Daitapati Sevayats, who apply it to the Shree Anga at night. Khadi Prasad also arrives from the Dutta Mahapatra Sevayats and is applied over the Shrimukha Hota.

The next stage is Banaka Lagi, when the divine faces are decorated according to hereditary temple tradition. After these healing rituals, Mahaprabhu is believed to have fully recovered. The Gajapati Maharaja is informed, and preparations for Ratha Yatra begin.
