Divine Harihara Besha: Balabhadra’s Vishnu-Shiva union attire
“Jo Harih Sa Harah Sakshat Yo Harah Sa Harih Sada.”
He who is Hari is Hara, and he who is Hara is Hari. There is no difference between the two. After the Avakasha Niti (ritual), Balabhadra, the elder Thakur, is adorned in the Harihara Besha. Half of the Thakur’s divine body is covered with white cloth and the other half with black cloth. Devotees become emotional upon witnessing the magnificent darshan of Shri Balabhadra, adorned in both white and black garments. In this captivating attire, the elder Thakur presents himself to the devotees, bearing a golden Nalibhuja (armlet) on his divine arm, earrings in his ears, an Odiani (waistband) around his waist, the sun, moon, and various types of golden garlands. In Shri Mandir, during the month of Kartik, from Deepavali Amavasya to Shukla Dashami, on a Monday, the elder Thakur Balabhadra is adorned in the Harihara Besha.
Shri Balabhadra is subjected to Shrikanthadi Nyasa. Essentially, this is a Harihara harmony puja. His body is Shiva, while his mantra is the Vasudeva mantra. Therefore, he is a confluence of Hari (Vasudeva mantra) and Hara (Shrikanthadi Nyasa). From this perspective, Balabhadra is both Hari and Hara in one stream. During the Mahakartik month in Shri Mandir, while the deities are adorned in six Vishnu-related Beshas, the Harihara Besha establishes a harmony between both Shiva and Vishnu. Especially because Monday is considered Shiva’s day, if a Monday falls between Amavasya and Shukla Dashami in the month of Kartik, the Harihara Besha is performed.
