Two days before a Soul who love Mahapravu so dedicatedly desired to know about the Devadasi Rituals at Mahapravu Shree Jagannath Temple. That’s why yesterday I posted with caption-“LAST PAHANDI OF OUR LAST DEVADASI” with some additions to the post which I posted two years earlier.
Today in the afternoon I got an instinct that Devadasi are now also performing their dedication in front of Mahapravu. As after Mahapravu’s Shree Jagannath Temple there is Shree Baladevjew Temple, Kendrapara; so inquired & I rang to a Sevayat(Panda) of there and what I heard I was completely mesmerised and my eyes were filled of tears.
My Manima may bless and fill the heart of that soul with his love and grace for whom (who desired to know about the Devadasi Rituals) I knew this holy fact and the matter is given below for all of you.
Taramani Debi by profession she is a home guard working under Kendrapada police but she performs the role of a ‘Devdasi’ before Mahapravu Shree Jagannath during Car festival at Tulashi Khetra,Shree Baladevjew Temple. Taramani Rout, 55-year khaki clad widow, mother of three children, and a resident of Bagapatia village under Rajnagar block of Kendrapara district, has been performing the role of Devadasi (temple dancer) in front of the presiding deities of 400 year old Holy Baladevjew temple at Tulashi khetra in Ichhapur village for a few years now.
She has been performing the dance before the deities during the car festival and other religious functions of the temple.
”The dance before the Bada Thakura Baldevjew is on its way to diminishing, as the art form is being looked upon with a feeling of derision but I do not regret performing. I feel heavenly pleasure by performing the dance before the deities,” she said.
During the last year Holy Rath Yatra day, Taramani Debi danced in front of devotees in front of the chariot at the Bada Danda during the ceremonial Pahandi Bije.
According to Balabhadra Suar, a priest of the temple as per the tradition, Devadasis had been performing a particular dance art form before the deities in the temple with an aim to show dance to the Mahapravu Shree Jagannath at Shree Baladevjew Temple,Kendrapada.

The last Devadasi of the Tulashi Khetra was septuagenarian Gorikiran Dasi, who passed away 20 years back and after her demise, nobody come forward to perform the dance before the Bada Thakura Shree Baladev. Then a man dressed like woman took the charge of Devadasi for three years.
Taramani Debi came to the picture to perform the age old tradition and urged the temple authority to allow her to perform the role of Devadasi before the deities in the temple, and expressed her gratitude to her senior officers, for granting permission to take leave on the Car festival day to perform dance.
Taramani Debi said after the death of her husband, she decided to dedicate her life to serve Mahapravu Shree Jagannath in Tulasi Khetra Shree Baladevjew Temple.
