The Unique Hanuman Temples of Puri
Panchamukhi Hanuman:
Located on the western side of the Gundicha Temple, near the sacred Indradyumna tank, the Panchamukhi Hanuman Temple houses a captivating five-faced deity. Each face represents a different aspect of divine power:
- Varaha (north): The boar incarnation of Vishnu, symbolizing strength and protection.
- Narasimha (south): The man-lion incarnation of Vishnu, representing the destruction of evil.
- Hanuman (east): The monkey god, embodying devotion and selfless service.
- Garuda (west): The mythical eagle, signifying speed and liberation.
- Hayagriva (top): The horse-headed incarnation of Vishnu, representing knowledge and wisdom.
This ten-armed deity, holding various weapons and symbols, stands victoriously over a demon, signifying the triumph of good over evil.
Tapasvi Hanuman:
Situated at the north gate of the Jagannath Temple, Tapasvi Hanuman serves as a guardian of the sacred complex. Also known as Chari-chakra Hanuman, he holds four chakras (discs) in his hands, symbolizing his control over the four directions and his ability to ward off negative energies.
This four-feet tall deity faces east, eternally vigilant in his duty to protect the temple and its devotees.
These unique Hanuman temples add to the rich spiritual landscape of Puri, showcasing the diverse manifestations of divine power. They offer devotees a chance to connect with Hanuman’s strength, devotion, and protective energies, seeking his blessings for their well-being and spiritual growth.
