Puri’s Asta Sambhu: The Eight Guardian Deities
OTHER THAN HIM ARE RELATIVELY TRUEβ¦.
The sacred city of Puri is not only protected by Lord Jagannath but also by a ring of eight powerful Shiva deities known as the Asta Sambhu. These guardian deities, mentioned in the Skanda Purana, play a crucial role in maintaining the sanctity and safety of Puri.
1. Kapala Mochana Mahadev:
Located near the southern gate of the Jagannath Temple, Kapala Mochana Mahadev is associated with a fascinating legend. It is believed that Lord Shiva, carrying the skull (kapala) of Brahma, was absolved of the sin of Brahmahatya (killing a Brahmin) when the skull miraculously detached from his hand in Puri. This temple, associated with Nakula, one of the Pandava brothers, is also linked to various festivals of the Jagannath Temple.
2. Lokanatha Mahadev:
Situated southwest of the Jagannath Temple, Lokanatha Mahadev is considered the main guardian deity among the Pancha Shiva (five Shiva temples) of Puri. This temple houses a Shiva linga submerged in water throughout the year, except on Pankoddhar Ekadashi, when the water is drained, allowing devotees to directly worship the linga. Lokanatha is associated with Bhima, the second Pandava brother.
3. Kameshvara Mahadev:
This temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva as the fulfiller of desires (Kameshvara), is located near the Lokanatha temple. It is believed to bestow blessings upon those seeking love, prosperity, and success in their endeavors.
4. Ksetrapala Mahadev:
Ksetrapala, the guardian of the sacred land (ksetra), is worshipped in this temple for protection and well-being. It is believed that he safeguards the city from negative forces and ensures the smooth conduct of rituals and festivals.
5. Yameshvara Mahadev:
Situated north of Tota Gopinatha temple, Yameshvara Mahadev is believed to control Yamraj, the god of death. This temple houses a unique Hari-Hara murti (a combined form of Vishnu and Shiva). Yameshvara is associated with Yudhisthira, the eldest Pandava brother.
6. Markandeshvara Mahadev:
Located on Markandeshvara Street, this ancient temple is linked to the sage Markandeya, renowned for his devotion to Shiva. The temple houses a Sivalinga and is associated with Arjuna, the third Pandava brother.
7. Isaneshvara Mahadev:
Isaneshvara represents Lord Shiva as the supreme ruler (Isana). This temple is dedicated to the worship of Shiva as the ultimate source of creation and the embodiment of divine power and authority.
8. Visveshvara Mahadev:
Visveshvara signifies Lord Shiva as the lord of the universe (Visva). This temple celebrates Shiva’s all-encompassing presence and his role as the protector and sustainer of all creation.
These Asta Sambhu temples, along with Nilakantheshvar, create a protective shield around Puri, ensuring the city’s spiritual well-being and safeguarding the sanctity of the Jagannath Temple. They represent the harmonious coexistence of Shaivism and Vaishnavism, showcasing the inclusive nature of Odia Hinduism.
