All Besha Of Shri Jagannath Mahaprabhu
The Hanuman Guardians of Puri
OTHER THAN HIM ARE RELATIVELY TRUE….
The sacred city of Puri is not only under the divine protection of Lord Jagannath but also guarded by His devoted servant, Hanuman. Two prominent Hanuman temples in Puri, Vargi Hanuman and Bedi Hanuman, stand as testaments to this divine protection, each with its own captivating legend.
Vargi Hanuman:
Located on Lokanatha Road, Vargi Hanuman safeguards the western approach to the Jagannath Temple. Legend has it that Puri was once threatened by the Vargis, a clan from Maharashtra who would disrupt the peace with their equestrian processions. To protect the city and the temple, a Hanuman deity was strategically placed on their route. The Vargis, being devotees of Hanuman themselves, were reluctant to pass the sacred idol, thus averting their intrusion into Puri.
Bedi Hanuman:
Situated near the Chakratirtha Road, Bedi Hanuman protects Puri from the fury of the ocean. Lord Jagannath, concerned about the destructive potential of the sea, entrusted Hanuman with the task of safeguarding the city from its wrath.
However, Hanuman once left his post without informing the Lord to visit Ayodhya. As a result, the ocean waves surged into Puri, causing distress to its inhabitants. Lord Jagannath promptly brought Hanuman back and bound him with ropes (“bedi”), commanding him to remain vigilant and never abandon his duty again.
Another version of the story narrates that Hanuman grew weary of the daily offering of Khichadi and desired more delectable food. He, therefore, ventured to Ayodhya in search of culinary delights. Upon his return, Lord Jagannath, understanding Hanuman’s desires, ensured that he received special laddus as part of his daily offerings.
These captivating tales highlight the unique relationship between Lord Jagannath and Hanuman, showcasing the latter’s unwavering devotion and his role as a protector of the sacred city. Both Vargi Hanuman and Bedi Hanuman are revered by devotees who seek their blessings for safety and well-being.
