The Story of Baihandi

The Jagannath Temple in Puri is renowned for its unique traditions and rituals, many of which are deeply intertwined with captivating legends. One such legend is the story of Baihandi, a special earthen pot used to offer Mahaprasad (sacred food) to Lord Jagannath.

This tale revolves around Karmabai, a devout woman from Maharashtra who embarked on a pilgrimage to Puri with her spiritual teacher, Indravarma. Upon witnessing the divine presence of Lord Jagannath, Karmabai felt a profound connection and decided to dedicate her life to serving the Lord in Puri.

Karmabai possessed a melodious voice and would often sing devotional songs, attracting many listeners. She also established a personal shrine to Lord Jagannath in her home, where she would offer daily prayers and food offerings.

One day, Karmabai decided to offer “Khechudi” (a savory rice dish) to the Lord. She prepared the Khechudi in a new earthen pot and offered it with utmost devotion, chanting “Pravu Kha loo” (“Please eat, Lord”). Lord Jagannath, pleased with her sincere devotion, accepted her offering.

Through a dream, the Lord conveyed His satisfaction to the Gajapati (King of Puri) and expressed His desire to receive Karmabai’s Khechudi as part of the daily temple offerings. The Gajapati, recognizing Karmabai’s devotion, readily agreed.

However, the temple servitors initially resisted, stating that food prepared outside the temple could not be offered to the Lord. Despite this setback, Karmabai persevered, and after seven days, her unwavering devotion convinced the servitors to accept her offering.

From that day forward, Karmabai’s Khechudi became a regular part of the Mahaprasad offered to Lord Jagannath. The earthen pot she used became known as “Baihandi,” and her offering was called “Mahadei Pak” in her honor.

The legend of Baihandi exemplifies the power of devotion and the profound connection between Lord Jagannath and His devotees. It highlights the Lord’s acceptance of offerings made with sincerity and love, regardless of social status or background. The story also underscores the importance of perseverance and faith in overcoming obstacles on the spiritual path.
