Unwavering Faith: The Inspiring Story of Dasia Bauri and Lord Jagannath
The path of devotion is paved with unwavering faith and love for the divine. The story of Dasia Bauri, a humble devotee of Lord Jagannath, exemplifies this truth. It speaks of his unconditional love, his fervent prayers, and the miraculous encounter with the Lord. Let’s delve into the life of this extraordinary devotee and the profound lessons it holds.
Dasia’s Unyielding Devotion
Dasia Bauri was born into a lower caste in Baligram, a village four miles from Puri. Society labeled him as untouchable and unworthy. Orphaned at a young age, Dasia grew up with an unshakeable belief in Lord Jagannath. He married a devout woman and earned his livelihood by weaving and selling cloth. In his heart, he was always thinking about Lord Jagannath and his heart always craved seeing him. He used to constantly think of him while he was sleeping or waking or sitting. He always thought of Lord Jagannath.
Due to his caste, Dasia was not allowed to enter the temple. This caused him immense pain and sorrow. He would plead to the Lord, “Oh, Lord, I am your lowly son. I am patita (fallen). Please forgive me and allow me to see your beautiful form on the Ratna Singhasana, please show your grace to me.”
A Simple Offering and a Heart Full of Devotion
One day, Dasia’s wife cooked a simple meal of white gruel and black leafy greens. As she was serving him the food, the greens accidentally fell on the gruel, forming a pattern resembling the chaka (circular eyes) of Lord Jagannath. Overwhelmed with devotion, Dasia started chanting the Lord’s name with tears streaming down his face, as he envisioned the Lord in that humble dish.
Villagers gathered around, with some calling him mad and others claiming he was possessed. However, Dasia, unmoved by their words, continued his devotional chants. A passing sadhu (holy man) witnessed this scene, removed the greens, and allowed Dasia to eat the gruel. This is a testament to the power of devotion, where the Lord manifests in any form that his devotees need.
A Vision of the Lord
At night, Dasia continued to pray, asking, “Oh, Lord, will I not receive your grace? Will my eyes not behold your divine form?” It is said that when a devotee’s heart brims with love and longing, the Lord cannot resist but appear before them. Lord Jagannath blessed Dasia with a divine vision, which led Dasia to an ecstatic state.
Lessons in Unwavering Faith
The story of Dasia Bauri emphasizes that devotion transcends caste and social barriers. It highlights that true faith, combined with a pure heart, can lead to divine encounters. Dasia’s unwavering belief in Lord Jagannath enabled him to experience the Lord’s grace, solidifying his place in the lore as one of the most devoted and loved of the Lord’s devotees.
