Jagannath Temple Festivals: Chandan Besha, Dasahaara & More
The Jagannath Temple in Puri is a living embodiment of devotion, where a continuous cycle of festivals and rituals connects the divine with the human. These celebrations offer a glimpse into the unique traditions and beliefs associated with Lord Jagannath, providing a rich cultural and spiritual experience for devotees and visitors alike.
Here are four distinctive festivals that showcase the temple’s diverse tapestry of observances:
1. Chandan Besha: As the summer heat intensifies in Baisakh (April-May), the deities are offered respite through Chandan Besha. This ritual involves adorning the deities with a cooling paste of sandalwood, camphor, and other fragrant substances. Starting on Akshaya Tritiya, this refreshing adornment continues for 42 days, providing a soothing balm to the deities and symbolizing care and devotion.
2. Saahasra Kumbha Abhiseka: On the eighth day of the dark fortnight of Aswina (September-October), a grand purification ceremony known as Saahasra Kumbha Abhiseka takes place. The deities are bathed with water from 1000 pots, signifying cleansing and renewal. This ritual also marks the commencement of Shohala Puja, a 16-day esoteric worship of Maa Bimala, the presiding goddess of the Shakti peeth within the Jagannath Temple complex.
3. Dasahaara: Celebrated on the tenth day of the bright fortnight of Aswina (September-October), Dasahaara at Jagannath Temple is a celebration of divine power and the triumph of good over evil. The deities are adorned in regal attire (Raja Besa), and their weapons (ayudhas) are worshipped, symbolizing their strength and victory over adharma.
4. Parswaparibartana: This unique festival, observed on the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of Bhadraba (August-September), involves a change in the sleeping positions of the deities. This symbolic act represents a period of rest and rejuvenation for the deities, highlighting the human-like qualities attributed to them.
