Banabhoji Besha

MAHAPRABHU SHREE JAGANNATH (BAPA) IS ABSOLUTE TRUE,
OTHER THAN HIM ARE RELATIVELY TRUE….

The Banabhoji Besha is a unique and playful attire adorned by Lord Jagannath at the Jagannath Temple in Puri. This Besha, performed on the 10th day of the dark fortnight of Bhadraba (August-September), depicts Lord Jagannath and his siblings dressed as cowherd boys ready for a picnic.

This Besha is rooted in the identification of Lord Jagannath with Lord Krishna. It commemorates Krishna’s childhood “lila” (divine play) where he, along with his friends, would venture into the forests of Vrindavan for picnics and adventures. The deities are adorned with simple attire and ornaments, reflecting the carefree spirit of childhood.

The Banabhoji Besha is a delightful spectacle that captures the essence of Lord Krishna’s playful nature. It’s a reminder of the joy and innocence that lie at the heart of spirituality.
