Adakia Besha: Jagannath’s Divine Trivikram Attire
On the thirteenth day of the bright fortnight of the Kartika month, the Adakia Besha or Trivikram Besha of the deities is held in the Shree Mandir. This adornment begins in the morning after the completion of the βAbakashaβ ritual of the Shree Jius. The Pushpalaka servitors perform this decoration.
In the Adakia Besha, ‘Chula’ (a type of headgear) is attached to the heads of Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra. These two ‘Chulas’ are made from materials such as thermocol, cloth, cane, jambura (a type of citrus fruit), and wood apple gum. A golden ‘Kia’ (a flower-shaped ornament) is fastened sideways onto this ‘Chula’. Additionally, a golden ‘Chandrika’ (a moon-shaped ornament) is placed at the top of the heads of Goddess Subhadra and the other two deities. Along with this, as on the previous day, the deities are adorned with other gold ornaments, weapons like the plough and pestle, conch, discus, and silk clothes in the Adakia orΒ Trivikram Besha. It is said that the Trivikram or Adakia Besha is very dear to the Atibadi sect. A large number of disciples, devotees, and Mahantas of the Panchasakha and Atibadi sects consider themselves fortunate to witness this beautiful adornment.
The difference between Adakia or Thia Kia Besha is that in the Thia Kia Besha, the golden ‘Kia’ is not placed vertically but sideways. And in the Dalikia Besha, golden ‘Kia’ leaves are attached to branches and leaves made of thermocol. These golden ‘Kias’ are tucked into the ‘Chula’ worn on the heads of Shree Jagannath and Shree Balabhadra, which is made of thermocol, cloth, cane, jambura, and wood apple gum. At the end of the ‘Chula’, a golden ‘Chandrika’ is attached. Goddess Subhadra is also adorned with a golden ‘Chandrika’ in this Besha. However, instead of a ‘Chula’, a golden crown is placed on her head. On the upper part of the faces of all the deities, two ‘Kadakanis’ are placed on each side. In this Besha, they wear various garlands like ‘Ghagada mali’, ‘Barakoli mali’, ‘Padma mali’, ‘Gini mali’, and ‘Padaka mali’. Besides these, other ornaments, garlands, and adornments for the feet and hands, as well as weapons, are used for the Mahaprabhu. Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra are dressed in a specific style of cloth called ‘Lugakachha’. This Besha was introduced by Mahant Maharaj Ram Jayanti Das. In this Besha, the ‘Chula’ made of thermocol, cloth, cane, jambura, and wood apple gum is placed on the divine heads of the Shree Jius. A golden ‘Kia’ is fastened sideways onto this ‘Chula’, while a golden ‘Chandrika’ is placed at the top.
