One day Arjuna asked Lord Krishna: “O Madhava, some people commit great sins, yet they never seem to suffer the consequences of their sins. Why is this so?” Then Krishna said: “O Arjuna, listen to a story carefully.”

There was an incident one day when a righteous king had organized a feast for the Brahmins. Hundreds of Brahmins were eating. The king himself went to serve food to an old Brahmin sitting at the end. At this time, a kite flying in the sky was carrying a dead snake. Some drops of poison from the snake’s mouth fell into the Brahmin’s food, and he died shortly after.

Yamaraja (the Lord of Death) saw this scene and became worried – who should be blamed for the Brahmin’s death? The king – who was unaware? The kite – who was taking food for its young ones? Or the snake – who was already dead?
No one had an answer.

Some time later, some Brahmins were coming to the royal palace to meet the king. While asking for directions, a man showed them the way and said: “Be careful, that king poisons the food of Brahmins and kills them.”

At that very moment, Yamaraja immediately held that man guilty of the Brahmin’s death. Yamadutas (Yamaraja’s messengers) asked – “Lord! This man has not killed anyone, so why is he guilty?” “O messengers, this man is merely slandering the king. What he is saying is not true. Without knowing the truth, he has brought defamation and blame upon an innocent king through this false statement.

And if anyone believes this false accusation and kills him, then this man will be the root cause. The person who spreads false stories to create fear or hatred in the minds of the public is the primary culprit for many crimes.

Therefore, O Arjuna, not only actions but also slander can lead to guilt in life. The person who speaks falsely and questions the truth is also the root cause of sin,” and becomes guilty.

Thus, sin is not only seen in actions, but it is also created by the words and thoughts of the mind. Therefore, it is essential to walk the path of truth, justice, and good behavior in life.
