The history of the Jagannath Temple in Puri is intertwined with periods of both peace and turmoil. During times of conflict, the safety and preservation of Lord Jagannath became paramount, leading to a fascinating practice known as “Patali,” the secret transfer of the deities to different locations for protection.
One notable instance occurred in 1733 AD when the temple faced attacks from Takkikhan. To safeguard Lord Jagannath, the sevayats (temple priests) embarked on a journey through the dense forests of Athagarh, eventually establishing a hidden temple in Marada where the deity was secretly worshipped for three years .
