Sankranti Homa: Igniting the Flame of Devotion
Sankranti, a festival celebrated throughout India, holds a special place in the hearts of Odias. Marking the sun’s transition from one zodiac sign to another, each Sankranti brings unique spiritual significance and is observed with various traditions and rituals. One of the key practices associated with Sankranti is the Sankranti Homa, a sacred fire ritual that resonates with devotion and cultural heritage.
The Significance of Sankranti
With twelve Sankrantis occurring throughout the year, each symbolizes a new beginning and a time for reflection and renewal. The day before Sankranti, known as Masanta, signifies the end of the lunar month and the culmination of the past.
Traditions of Sankranti Homa
On Sankranti, devotees often visit temples to offer prayers, particularly those dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Hanuman. Many temples conduct Homa (fire ritual) as a way to invoke blessings and usher in positive energy. This sacred practice is not limited to temples; many households and businesses also perform Sankranti Homa

The Sankranti Homa at Shri Jagannath Temple
At the revered Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri, the Sankranti Homa is a significant event. Traditionally performed at the Singhadwara (Lion’s Gate), this ritual is now conducted at all four gates of the temple. During the Homa, devotees offer lia (puffed rice), ghee, and coconut to the sacred fire.
The Brahmin priests chant mantras and offer ghee to the fire while devotees share their family name (gotra) and personal name. As a blessed offering, devotees receive ash from the Homa and a piece of the burned coconut.
A Symbolic Act of Purification and Renewal
The Sankranti Homa is more than just a ritualistic practice; it is a profound symbol of purification and new beginnings. The sacred fire acts as a conduit for prayers, connecting devotees with the divine.
Offering lia, ghee, and coconut symbolizes surrendering one’s ego, desires, and material attachments to a higher power. The Homa is a way to cleanse oneself of negativity, invite positive energy, and embark on a path of spiritual growth.
Bringing Tradition Home
Sankranti Homa is a beautiful tradition that connects individuals to the cycles of nature and the divine. By understanding its significance and participating in this sacred ritual, we can embrace the spirit of renewal and embark on a journey of spiritual growth and self-discovery.
