Phuluri Tela (floral oil) to the deities in the Sri Jagannath Temple during the Anasara Panchami.
The article describes the application of Phuluri Tela (floral oil) to the deities in the Sri Jagannath Temple during the Anasara Panchami.
“Idam Gopyataram Vishnoh Kathayami Samasatah |
Yatoh Niladrisimhasya Bhaktosi Nripasattama ||”
During Anasara, Lord Jagannath undergoes treatment which requires “Phuluri Tela” and “Dashamula Modaka”. Today, this Phuluri Tela will be applied to the deities. It is said that this helps the Lord recover. This ritual takes place on Ashadha Krishna Panchami or “Anasara Panchami”. Today, on the Panchami Tithi, the Phuluri Tela will be applied to the Lord. The Bada Odia Matha, established by the author of the Odia Bhagavata, Atibadi Jagannath Das, provides this oil. Following the advice of the Vaidya (traditional physician), this Phuluri Tela treatment will be given to the Srijiu (deities) at the Anasara Pindi (seclusion platform).
To heal His sacred body, Phuluri Tela will be massaged today. Every year during Anasara, the Bada Odia Matha provides 6 Sera (a traditional unit of weight) of Phuluri Tela. Only during the Nabakalebara (renewal of the deities) year, 9 Sera of Phuluri Tela is given. The Phuluri Tela is applied from Ashadha Krishna Panchami to Saptami. It is prepared through a special process. On Hera Panchami Tithi, three clay pots of three Sera each are required. In these three pots, sesame oil extracted by a Ghani (traditional oil press) is mixed with Krishna Bhoga paddy, Bena root, sandalwood, Ketaki, Champa, Baula, Malati, Malli, Jui, Jai, etc. flowers, Sala Parni, Gambhari, Labanga Kuli, Phanaphana, Krishna Parni, Bela, Khani Bathu, Patali, Khua, Ankaranti, Gokhara, Lambagoti, দΰ§ΰ¦Άΰ§ Ghee (clarified butter), honey, Nabata (rock candy), Khuasara, etc. This mixture is then buried under the soil for one year, which is called Phuluri Tela. After keeping this mixture under the soil for a long period of one year, it is taken out on Devasnana Purnima (the bathing festival). During this period, this mixed oil transforms into a medicine. According to Ayurveda, all these flowers and Bena root have the power to provide warmth to the body. Therefore, it is imagined that the Lord becomes unwell due to excessive bathing, and this oil is massaged on His sacred body. On Anasara Panchami, this oil is filtered and sent as Amunia (a special offering) for application to the Lord.
