As the sacred month of Dhanu begins, a special tradition awakens at the Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri. It’s the time for theΒ Pahili Bhog, a unique offering made to the Lord in the early hours of dawn. Let’s explore the beauty and significance of this cherished ritual.
The Beginning ofΒ Pahili Bhog
Starting from Monday, on the occasion of Dhanu Sankranti, theΒ Pahili BhogΒ ritual will commence at the Shri Jagannath Temple. This beautiful practice will continue every day until January 13, the day before Makar Sankranti. The daily schedule for this period has been approved, inviting devotees to witness the beautiful early morning offerings.

The daily routine duringΒ Pahili BhogΒ is carefully planned. Hereβs a glimpse at the sequence of events:

2:30 AM:Β The inner temple area is cleaned.

3:00 AM:Β TheΒ Mangal AartiΒ (morning prayers) begins.

5:30 AM – 6:00 AM:Β TheΒ Pahili BhogΒ ritual takes place with offerings to the deities.

6:30 AM – 8:00 AM:Β Sakala DhupaΒ (morning offering, onlyΒ Kotha Bhoga).

8:20 AM – 10:00 AM:Β Bhoga MandapΒ (food offerings) is completed.

10:30 AM – 12:00 PM:Β Madhyahna DhupaΒ (midday offering, onlyΒ Kotha Bhoga).

7:45 PM – 9:30 PM:Β Dwitiya Bhoga MandapΒ (second food offering) is completed, followed by other rituals.
