As the sacred month of Dhanu begins, a special tradition awakens at the Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri. It’s the time for theย Pahili Bhog, a unique offering made to the Lord in the early hours of dawn. Let’s explore the beauty and significance of this cherished ritual.
The Beginning ofย Pahili Bhog
Starting from Monday, on the occasion of Dhanu Sankranti, theย Pahili Bhogย ritual will commence at the Shri Jagannath Temple. This beautiful practice will continue every day until January 13, the day before Makar Sankranti. The daily schedule for this period has been approved, inviting devotees to witness the beautiful early morning offerings.
A Schedule of Divine Moments
The daily routine duringย Pahili Bhogย is carefully planned. Hereโs a glimpse at the sequence of events:

2:00 AM:ย The temple doors open.

2:30 AM:ย The inner temple area is cleaned.

3:00 AM:ย Theย Mangal Aartiย (morning prayers) begins.

5:30 AM – 6:00 AM:ย Theย Pahili Bhogย ritual takes place with offerings to the deities.

6:30 AM – 8:00 AM:ย Sakala Dhupaย (morning offering, onlyย Kotha Bhoga).

8:20 AM – 10:00 AM:ย Bhoga Mandapย (food offerings) is completed.

10:30 AM – 12:00 PM:ย Madhyahna Dhupaย (midday offering, onlyย Kotha Bhoga).

7:45 PM – 9:30 PM:ย Dwitiya Bhoga Mandapย (second food offering) is completed, followed by other rituals.

5:00 PM:ย Theย Sandhya Aartiย (evening prayer).
