Padma Besha: Lord Jagannath’s Lotus Attire
Padma Besha, meaning “lotus attire,” is a unique and beautiful Besha adorned by Lord Jagannath at the Jagannath Temple in Puri. This Besha is performed on any Saturday or Wednesday between the new moon day of Magha (January-February) and Basanta Panchami. The Padma Besha is a visual spectacle, with the deities adorned with intricate lotus flower decorations. Large lotus petals are used to create disc-shaped ornaments for their faces, and they hold lotus buds in their hands. Their crowns are adorned with countless lotus flowers, and four swans are incorporated into the design, adding a touch of grace and liveliness .
This Besha has a fascinating backstory. It commemorates the devotion of Manohar Das, a devotee from a distant village who embarked on a long journey to offer lotus flowers to Lord Jagannath. Despite the flowers wilting during his arduous journey, Lord Jagannath, moved by his devotion, appeared in the king’s dream and instructed him to adorn the deities with those very flowers. Miraculously, the flowers regained their freshness and emitted a divine fragrance .
The Padma Besha is a testament to the power of devotion and the compassionate nature of Lord Jagannath. It’s a reminder that true devotion transcends any material offering and that the Lord recognizes and honors the sincere intentions of his devotees.
