The power of faith, a cornerstone of spiritual life, transcends all boundaries of culture and geography. This truth is beautifully illustrated in the story of a French bell at the Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri. This tale, a unique blend of history and devotion, speaks of a miraculous rescue and the enduring power of belief in the Lord. Let’s explore this captivating narrative and discover the story of this unique offering to Lord Jagannath.
The Voyage and the Imminent Storm
Centuries ago, a ship embarked on a journey from a port in France towards the French colony of Pondicherry, carrying a large metal bell intended for a church there. The ship was captained by the experienced Captain Bito, who had navigated countless perils of the sea.
However, as the ship sailed, a crew member spotted a massive sea creature approaching them. The crew panicked, but Captain Bito, recognizing the signs, knew it was not an animal but a terrifying storm that threatened their ship. Faced with imminent danger, they could find no way to escape.
In the midst of the chaos, the experienced Captain Bito ordered the alarm bell to be rung. But amongst all the commotion, he noticed one of the crew members sitting calmly, focused on a photograph.
Intrigued, the Captain asked him about it. The crew member shared that he was a devotee of Lord Jagannath and was praying for his protection. He stated, that he had unwavering faith in the Lord.
A Prayer Across Cultures
Although Captain Bito, a Christian, found it difficult to place his faith in another’s god, he was intrigued by the crew member’s unwavering belief. Upon his insistence, the captain also gazed at the image of Lord Jagannath’s eyes, and all the crew members started chanting, invoking the name of the Lord.
As they all looked at the image, seeking the Lord’s grace, the storm miraculously dissipated and the ship continued on its journey, safe and sound.
The Bell’s Journey to Puri
Captain Bito, forever changed by this experience, asked the devotee to tell him about Lord Jagannath and where he could see him. The crew member shared that he resides in Shrikshetra Puri.
Captain Bito, filled with reverence, then changed course and headed towards Puri. He decided that the bell, once intended for a church, was to be offered to the divine Lord Jagannath, the one who had saved his life. He arrived at Puri and offered the bell, as well as some other gifts, at the feet of the Lord.
This French bell, a symbol of faith and gratitude, now resides at the Niladri Bihar Museum near the western gate of Shri Mandir, where devotees can see it as a symbol of the Lord’s glory.
A Testament to Universal Devotion
The bell has a French inscription, “CANTA BOET PSALLAMIN GEN TIBUS DE FRANCE MF PONDICHERRY 1746, NOMME PIWRRIE ANDRE JF PESSE 900, A PONDICHERRY 1746 IA LIBERALITE DE PEDRO MOUDEN COURT”. A brief explanation of the story is also engraved on a cement plaque at its base.
After India’s independence, the French government requested that the bell be returned to them. But the Indian government did not return it as it was a symbol of devotion to the Lord by a grateful devotee.
The All-Seeing Eyes and Divine Protection
This story highlights the power of faith and the universal appeal of Lord Jagannath, who is seen as the protector of all. It also emphasizes that any heart that believes in him and seeks refuge from danger will be protected.
As the poet Kalpalata Jena says:
“Jagabandhu Nathanku ye muruchi nuhanhi,
Jeniki chahinle tanka shrimukha dishihi.”
Dhanya tanka chaka ankhi, mana rahi jaye lakhi,
Bahu tekichhanti dukhi tariba paiin.”
This translates to:
“Those who desire to worship Jagabandhu Nath are never disappointed. No matter where they turn, they see His face. Blessed are his circular eyes, in which the mind gets attached. He lifts his arms to save the afflicted.”
This also highlights the belief that by focusing on the Chaka Ankhi (round eyes) of Lord Jagannath, any danger can be overcome. This unique bell is a living example of that.
