Pana Sankranti / Odia New Year
Pana Sankranti, also known as Maha Vishuba Sankranti, marks the traditional Odia New Year and will be celebrated on April 14, 2026. This auspicious day signifies the solar transition of the Sun into Mesha Rashi (Aries), symbolizing renewal, prosperity, and the beginning of a new agricultural and spiritual cycle. It also coincides with the birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman, adding to its religious importance.
At the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, the festival is observed with deep devotion and unique rituals dedicated to Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra. One of the most important ceremonies is the Nutan Panjika Patha, where the new Odia almanac (Panjika) is ceremonially read before the deities. This ritual establishes the temple’s spiritual calendar, including festivals, auspicious timings, and daily observances for the year ahead.
A special offering known as Bela Pana Bhoga is prepared and presented to the deities. This refreshing drink, made from wood apple (bel), coconut, jaggery, yogurt, and spices, is believed to provide cooling relief during the intense summer heat. Another symbolic ritual is Basundhara Theki, where an earthen pot filled with water or pana is hung above a sacred Tulsi plant, allowing water to drip continuously. This represents life-giving rain and prayers for a prosperous harvest season.
The day may also mark the beginning of new service cycles (Pala) among temple servitors (Sevayats), aligning with the new Panjika. Overall, Pana Sankranti at Jagannath Temple reflects a harmonious blend of devotion, tradition, and cultural heritage, celebrating new beginnings with spiritual significance and community spirit.
