Divine Rajendrabhishek: A Glimpse into Puri Srimandir’s Sacred Rituals
Today at the Srimandir, the Rajendrabhishek rituals are being held. On the tenth day of the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha, the Rajendrabhishek rituals are observed. Today, after the evening ‘dhupa’ ritual, Shri Madanmohan will receive the ‘ajna mala’ (garland of permission) and will be seated on a cot placed near Bhog Bata Ganesh. Following this, the inner sanctum will be purified, and the Jaya Vijaya doors will be closed, plunging the Jagamohan into complete darkness. During this time, the ‘alata’ (lamp) service of the Mahaprabhu takes place in the Garbhagriha (inner sanctum). After this, a ‘dagara’ (servitor) will come and inform Madanmohan about Rukmini’s marriage proposal, and the Lord himself will express his desire to undergo the Rajendrabhishek. Shri Madanmohan will then be carried by the Mahajanas (servitors) and will ascend a beautifully decorated chariot situated at the base of the Bata tree (Banyan tree). Accompanied by the sounds of the bell, umbrella, and ‘kahali’ (a type of trumpet), the ‘bimanabadu’ (carriers) will circumambulate the ‘Bada Deula’ (main temple complex) with the chariot and then return it to the Bata tree. During this time, the Palia Khuntia, Garabadu sevakas will be present.
A servitor, dressed as the playful Kuta Kautuka Rishi, will offer obeisance to the Mahaprabhu with a staff and receive a garland of white flowers from the Palia Khuntia. He will then take the flowers in his hands and scatter them on the path of procession, repeatedly prostrating before Shri Madanmohan as he leads him towards the Dakshini Ghara (south house). Here, after being seated on a cot, Shri Madanmohan will be bathed with Panchamrita (a mixture of five nectars). Thereafter, he will be adorned with flowers and sandalwood paste, and the ‘besha’ (attire) will be completed. He will be offered a ‘shitala bhoga’ (cool offering) consisting of kheer (rice pudding) and amalu bhoga, followed by the ‘bandapana’ (adoration) ritual, after which he will return to his abode in the Dakshini Ghara.
During the Abhishek (consecration), a royal umbrella will be held aloft, and the sounds of the bell, kahali, and mahuri (a type of wind instrument) will resonate. After the Abhishek is completed, Pana Bhoga (a sweet drink offering) and other rituals will be performed inside.
