Bada Mahasnana: Purifying the Puri Temple
The Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri is known for its meticulous adherence to tradition, especially concerning the purity of its sacred space. One such tradition is the Bada Mahasnana Niti (Grand Cleansing Ritual), a ceremony performed when the sanctity of the temple premises is compromised by certain events. Letβs explore this important ritual and understand its significance within the daily life of the temple.
The Significance of Maintaining Purity
According to Shri Mandirβs traditions, if blood is spilled, someone vomits, or bodily fluids from a child or an elderly person are released between the Jaya-Vijaya Dwara and the Beharana Dwara (where the returning devotees take exit), then the ongoing rituals must be immediately halted.
This interruption is followed by a thorough cleansing of the affected area using lime water, a method believed to restore purity. Following this, the Pujapanda servitors perform the Bada Mahasnana Niti of the deities.
The Bada Mahasnana Niti Explained
The Bada Mahasnana Niti is a grand cleansing ritual of Lord Jagannath and his siblings. This is performed whenever any impurities happen in the sacred areas of the temple.
The primary objective of this ritual is to purify the deities after an incident that is deemed to have compromised the sanctity of the templeβs environment. This is not a daily occurrence, but is performed whenever such circumstances necessitate.
During this cleansing, the public darshan (viewing) is stopped, and only the servitors are present inside. Once the Bada Mahasnana Niti is complete, darshan resumes, and the temple’s other daily rituals follow.
Why Does This Ritual Occur?
The Shri Jagannath Temple attracts thousands of devotees daily, leading to large crowds. This creates situations where people can unfortunately get injured and blood may be spilled. Sometimes, pilgrims become ill and vomit within the temple premises, and this also warrants a Bada Mahasnana Niti.
These situations, while often unforeseen, highlight the importance of maintaining purity within the temple, as per its ancient traditions, and emphasize the templeβs commitment to protecting its sacred space.
A Reminder of the Sacred
The Bada Mahasnana Niti is a reminder of the utmost importance that is given to maintaining sanctity within the Shri Jagannath Temple, and how even when such an incident occurs, the proper course of action is taken to ensure that the space is purified and the Lordβs divine essence is maintained.
