Sri Sudarshana: The Mysterious Fourth Deity
When we look upon the Ratnasimhasana in Puri, we see the Holy Trinity: Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Sri Jagannath. But there is a fourth divine presence, standing to the left of Lord Jagannath like a radiant pillar of wood. This is the mysterious and powerful Sri Sudarshana.
But who is he? Is he just Lord Vishnu’s divine weapon, the Sudarshana Chakra? Or is he something more? The answer, like everything about Jagannath culture, is full of profound mystery and meaning.
More Than a Weapon: A Divine Being
In Puri, Sri Sudarshana is not merely an instrument; he is worshipped as a complete deity. Forged from the divine radiance of the sun, he is considered the embodiment of deep spiritual concepts. Different saints and scriptures see him as:
- The representation of the Atharvaveda.
- A symbol of the Turiya, or the pure, transcendental state of consciousness beyond waking, dreaming, and deep sleep.
- The divine sound of Omkara.
He is an integral part of the divine family, with his own unique identity and power.
The Secret of the Pillar Form
Why is the all-powerful, circular discus of Lord Vishnu worshipped in the form of a pillar? A beautiful story from the temple’s oral tradition reveals the secret.
It is said that Sri Sudarshana once became filled with pride, believing that Lord Vishnu’s success depended entirely on his power. To teach him a lesson in humility, the Lord sent him to summon the great devotee, Hanuman. Sudarshana, in his pride, tried to block Hanuman’s path to the Lord.
Seeing this, Hanuman easily captured the mighty chakra and presented himself before Sri Jagannath. Saddened by his weapon’s ego, the Lord cursed Sudarshana to lose his circular form and become a stationary pillar (Stambha). When Sudarshana pleaded for forgiveness, the compassionate Lord blessed him, granting him a permanent place on the Ratnasimhasana by His side in his new pillar form. He also gave him the honor of residing in his original circular form as the glorious Nilachakra (Blue Wheel) atop the pinnacle of the Srimandir.

The Leader in Every Ritual
In the Srimandir, Sri Sudarshana’s importance is supreme. In every festival, he is the leader.
- During the grand Pahandi processions of Rath Yatra, it is Sri Sudarshana who emerges from the temple first, clearing the path for the other deities.
- He receives special honors and a significant number of holy water pots during the Snana Purnima bathing festival.
- He even has his own festivals where he travels out of the temple as a representative of the Lord.
His power is not just for defeating demons in Puranic tales; it is accessible to every devotee. For those seeking protection and strength in their own lives, meditating on His form and chanting His mantras can be a source of great solace. Many devotees keep a small Sudarshana Yantra or idol in their homes or workplace as a powerful symbol of divine protection.
Sri Sudarshana is a protector, a leader, and a mysterious, powerful deity whose worship brings immense grace and removes all fear.
Jai Sudarshana! Jai Jagannath!
