The Divine Adornments: Exploring the Bejeweled Chitas of Lord Jagannath and Siblings
In the heart of the Shri Jagannath Temple, the deities are adorned with exquisite ornaments, each possessing a unique significance. Among these, theย Chitasย (forehead ornaments) of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra stand out for their intricate designs and precious stones. Letโs delve into the details of theseย chitasย and appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into their creation.
Lord Jagannath’s Diamond-Studdedย Chita
-
Names:ย In theย Shri Mandir Swatwa Lipiย (Record of Rights), Lord Jagannathโsย chitaย is referred to as “Heera Chita” (Diamond Chita). Itโs also sometimes called “Dhala” Chita (White Chita).
-
Design:ย Theย chitaย has a large diamond at its center, which is considered theย nayakaย (leader) stone. Around this central diamond are seven concentric circles (bedha), each set with smaller precious stones such as diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and opals. The seventh and outermost circle is crowned with a large, heart-shaped orย paanย (betel leaf) shapedย Brahmajyotiย diamond at its apex, which is also considered the top of the ornament. This design showcases the beautiful arrangement of precious stones around the central diamond.
Lord Balabhadra’s Emerald-Studdedย Chita
-
Names:ย In theย Shri Mandir Swatwa Lipi, Lord Balabhadraโsย chitaย is referred to as “Neela Chita”. However, some accounts also mention it as the โNeelโ Chita (Blue Chita).
-
Design:ย Although it’s called “Neela” or blue, Lord Balabhadra’sย chitaย is centered around a largeย markataย (emerald). Surrounding this are five concentric circles, adorned with smaller stones like diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires andย markata. This design incorporates various precious stones centered around an emerald, hence the name โNeela Chitaโ.
Goddess Subhadra’s Emerald-Studdedย Chita
-
Names:ย Theย Shri Mandir Swatwa Lipiย calls Goddess Subhadraโsย chitaย as “Manikya Chita” (Ruby Chita). However, itโs also referred to as โNaliโ (Red) Chita.
-
Design:ย Even though the Chita is called โRubyโ or red, Goddess Subhadraโsย chitaย has an emerald in the center. This central emerald is surrounded by three concentric circles, set with diamonds, rubies, and emeralds. The emerald is what makes it more like a โNeelaโ (Green) Chita
These distinct designs, reflecting the divine essence of each deity, enhance their beauty.
The Significance of the Chitas
Theseย chitasย are not just ornaments; they represent the divine glory of each deity and reflect the care and devotion that goes into their creation. The use of specific stones and the design are deeply symbolic, contributing to the overall spiritual significance of the deities at Shri Mandir.
